Meet the Principal: Justin Sanderson of River Ridge HS

Our Principals can’t wait to welcome our students to learn more, grow more, and achieve more in our classrooms!  As we count down to the first day of school, we’re introducing you to our schools’ new principals.

The new leader of River Ridge High School didn’t have to travel far from his previous school.

Principal Justin Sanderson most recently served as leader of neighboring Mill Creek Middle School and will join his former students at “the Ridge” beginning this school year!  A 23-year educator, Principal Sanderson began his school leadership career at Etowah High School as an assistant principal after teaching high school and coaching football in Fulton County.

What are you most looking forward to in your new role? 

I am incredibly honored and excited to begin this new chapter as Principal of River Ridge High School.  After having the privilege of serving the students, families, and staff at our feeder middle school, Mill Creek, I look forward to continuing the positive and meaningful work that makes this school zone and community so special.  Together, we will build on an already established and strong foundation, celebrate every success, adjust when we need to, and create even greater opportunities for all our students.  Go Knights!

What inspired you to become an educator?

My mom was an English teacher, and my dad was a teacher, coach, principal and Superintendent, and growing up I got to see how many people they affected in a positive manner.  The interactions both had with former colleagues and students were impactful and made me really admire the work they did.  I wanted that for myself and truly enjoy trying to inspire and coach others to be great in whatever they do.  I take pride in building relationships with my staff and students and want them to be comfortable coming to me for guidance and/or support.

How can parents be more involved with your school?

Parents play a vital role in helping students succeed in high school, even as students become more independent.  One of the most impactful ways parents can be involved is by working alongside the school to help hold students accountable for their attendance, behavior, academic performance, and personal responsibility.  When students see that their parents and school are united with consistent expectations, they are more likely to make positive choices and stay focused on their goals.  Parents can also motivate their students to be their very best by celebrating effort, encouraging perseverance through productive struggles, and emphasizing the importance of character and responsibility.  Whether a student’s plans after high school include college, the military, technical education, or entering the workforce, all our students benefit from knowing the adults in their lives see them, believe in their potential, and expect them to strive for excellence.
